Vanda

Origin of the Vanda

A great variety of the Vandas from the wild can be found in the north of Thailand. They grow on treetops with their roots attached to the tree trunk. The roots absorb a great deal of moisture from the morning dew and from rainfall. Most Vandas available retail are a cross between the blue Vanda Coerulea and the two toned Vanda Sanderiana. The orchids on sale at Euroorchid, are multiplied in a lab. The cultivator makes a selection of plants and multiplies these plants in a lab using a merit system.

Care of the Vanda

If there is a lot of light, submerge the roots once a day in a bucket of tepid water. If the plant is in a more shady area do the same twice a week. During the growth period (March until September) mist twice a month with the same mix as for your other orchids. Dont mist in the Winter. Hang your Vanda in as light an area as possible inside the home. If the leaf feels warmer, remove from the light. The Vanda can also be placed in a glass vase. The roots then attach themselves to the glass. Watering for this plant is as follows: full the vase with water 2 - 3 times a week, wait 10 minutes and then throw out the water. From May until October the plant can hang outside, provided that the night time temperature doesnt fall below 6 degrees Celsius. Dont hang the orchid in direct sunlight. Only water when it is very dry, night dew is enough moisture for the plant to grow. Mist the plant 1- 2 a month. Vandas dont have a specific blossoming period and can therefore bloom many times a year. Care during the blooming period remains the same. With good care the same flowers can bloom for 1 to 2 months.
