Zygopetalum

Origin of the Zygopetalum

This orchid grows in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia on tree trunks, roots and leaves. During the blooming period some sorts of Zygopetalum emit a fragrant perfume.

Care of the Zygopetalum

During the summer blooming period, place the plant in a light place outside or in a cool light area inside. A rest period of 10 weeks at the end of the growth period (March until September) fosters blossoming. A rest period means that the orchid should be placed in a cool, shady place. Of course the plant should not be allowed to dehydrate! In the summer, during the growth period keep the bud damp and in the winter at night submerge the bud once a week in tepid water. The Zygopetalum can bloom again from each new shoot can foster a new. After 2 to 3 years the plant must be moved to a bigger pot or be split up and re-potted in two parts. Use orchid potting soil for this.
