Cattleya

Origin of the Cattleya

Cattleya’s are also known as corsage orchids. The flowers can grow quite large, as high as 20 centimeters. They are often fragrant. The only disadvantage is that the flowers only bloom for 2 - 3 weeks. Moisture is very important for Cattleya's. They are epiphytes which means that in addition to psuedo- bulbs , they also have big roots which try to climb out of their pots. These roots should be misted regularly.

Care of the Cattleya

Cattleya’s need a lot of light, at least a half day exposure and if the climate permits, they can remain outside in the summer in half sun and half shade. In between waterings the Cattleya’s can become practically dehydrated. Their day time temperature should be between 21- 32 degrees Celsius and at night 16 - 24 degrees.
Cattleya’s like to be transplanted to a bigger pot every two years. Use fine bark (potting-soil) if the orchid has small leaves and larger bark if the orchid has bigger leaves.
